Summary : The residents of District 8, known locally as Da 8, are a multicultural cavalcade: Hungarians, Gypsies, Arabs, Chinese, Americans, Germans, prostitutes, the occasional policeman and many animals. The everyday trials of the characters are molded in reality but interwoven with abstract, absurd episodes where anything can happen and everything usually does. Friends vs. foes, love vs. sex, crime vs. respect. The conflicts we often have to deal with ourselves are treated with situational humor and hilarious commentary by a haphazardly recruited gang of insolent rascals and their families. The main characters of The District are the antithesis of traditional Eastern European animation heroes and heroines. You?ll find no romanticized Gypsies in The District. The Roma and other characters are as they often are in real life; living on the razor?s edge between law and lawlessness, in a continuous struggle with the so-called majority, surviving through shrewd genius, self-deprecation, and cathartic reconciliation, and even with the possibility of Hungarian-Roma love, Romeo and Juliet style.
